The
Chinese have a Saying: "in the North the Shaolin School is respected,
and in the South The Wudang School is Esteemed". The two schools are
similar in that they both started in temples, the Shaolin Buddhist, and the
Wudang Daoist. Most schools nowdays do not impress the religion apon the students.
As daoism is actually not a religion, but a way of life, it is very common
to find Christian or Hindu etc Daoists.
Daoism is finding the middle path the path of balance and the centre of hard and soft. As this is the way of the taiji (the black and white yin yang symbol). The Wudang Martial Arts are practiced in the same respect of finding the middle road. The Wudang Martial Arts practice both Northern leg Techniques and Southern Hand Techniques, Locks and Holds and Wrestling techniques.
The main differences between The Wudang Martial Arts and others are THREE:
1 The Wudang Martial Arts practice starts with Taiji as the CORE as this teaches the Yin side of KungFu and this is compulsory and not so in other arts. The Taiji is the single core that runs through EVERY movement Punch, Kick, Throw, Lock or hold. This taiji concept is the main difference between most arts and The Wudang Martial Arts.
2 Most Chinese Martial Arts practice a variety of styles, Like Northern Fist, Southern Fist, Tiger Fist, Crane Fist etc. In Wudang Martial Arts even though you maybe learning one of the many styles, all the styles have the same taiji CORE running through.
3 The Wudang Martial Arts put huge emphasis on mind development, thus Meditation and Qi-gong is Paramount.
